How to Achieve ISO/IEC 17020 Accreditation

    Where Do I Start?

We recommend reading MA 3033, Accreditation Manual for Forensic Service Providers, and reviewing the ISO/IEC 17020 requirements, ANAB requirements and other documents for the applicable program, and the flow chart below to begin the accreditation process.

ISO/IEC 17020 specifies requirements for the operation of bodies performing inspection. An important difference between inspection and testing is that many types of inspection involve professional judgment to determine acceptability against general requirements, which is why the inspection body needs to be competent to perform the task.

ISO/IEC 17020 consists of eight sections:

    • Scope
    • Normative Requirements
    • Terms and Definitions
    • General Requirements
    • Structural Requirements
    • Resource Requirements
    • Process Requirements
    • Management System Requirements

ANAB's forensic accreditation program requirements add forensic-specific requirements in areas where ISO/IEC 17020 is general.

The next step is to send email or call 414-501-5455, to begin discussions. You’ll find our employees very welcoming of inquiries and ready to help.

Determining your scope of accreditation is the next critical step. Your scope defines the specific types of inspection for which your organization will be accredited, and it helps us to determine the number of days needed for your on-site assessment. It’s not necessary to become accredited for all your organization’s capabilities, and it’s possible that the initial draft scope may not be your final scope of accreditation.
